Trying a new natural oil or skincare product can be exciting, but your skin may not react the same way as someone else’s. That is why knowing how to patch test essential oils is a simple step worth making part of your routine, especially when introducing a new essential oil, carrier oil or cosmetic product.
A patch test involves applying a small amount of a product to a limited area of skin and observing how your skin responds before using it more widely.
It can help you identify whether a particular product appears to cause irritation or an unwanted reaction.
Essential oils should generally be diluted before topical application.
Apply a small amount of the properly diluted preparation to a small area of skin, such as the inner forearm.
Leave the area undisturbed and monitor your skin for any signs of discomfort, redness, itching or irritation.
If a reaction occurs, discontinue use and wash the area.
Remember that a patch test does not guarantee that you will never experience a reaction elsewhere on the body. It is simply an additional precaution.
· Consider patch testing when:
· Trying a new essential oil
· Using a new carrier oil
· Introducing a new skincare product
· Trying a homemade body or hair formulation
· Using a product on sensitive skin

Natural does not automatically mean suitable for every person.
Taking a few minutes to patch test can help you introduce new products more carefully and confidently.
